RESPONSES FROM VISITORS TO THE COMMUNITY HEARTBEATS EXHIBITION

These images continually struck at my deepest impulses for sadness, compassion, and hopefulness. I was transported to so many stark and difficult realities and challenged to think of how they might be changed. This exhibition drove home for me that human rights do not just consist of sentences on a piece of paper. They are basic needs that remain unmet for so many in my own community, and we must change things.

The images are very provocative. It inspires me to speak more in the images I create. I want to join the chorus of singing, weeping, and screaming that tells the world we are all one. Thank you for your offering of truth and hope…

The portrayal of class disparity in several images is very important to the overall effect of the exhibition. The images are more powerful when people can contrast their own life to the realities of another person. Children must be shown these pictures!

Empowering. ART IS NOT ELITE. Startling to see the beauty in Toledo and that here, right now, people (real people) care…notice!

The first step in our journey must be to list the names of groups in our community who work for Peace and Justice—contact their leaders and set up a meeting with them to find community of purpose. I would be pleased to offer my home as a meeting place. People must be made to wake up out of their complacency…..I have also shrunk away from my responsibility as a citizen of the world to help others in any way possible. The art and representations on display here show very clearly both the despair and hope that our young ones feel. Please tell me how I can help.
